A good romance writer makes you root for the young lovers and live and die with them as they meet, part, and somehow get back together.
And finally, a successful book must have a strong lead who has grit, brains, and the hardest creation of all--humor.
The author has concocted a confection of almost historical fiction, a romance without the cliched bodice-ripping, and a genuine puzzler about a man who seems lost from colonial times and the modern woman who puts the pieces together. She is a tough cookie from Brooklyn who is also a scholar teaching the colonial era. With the help of a star pupil, the two slide down the rabbit hole and uncover a centuries-old secret.
